Developing better products faster

Intelligensys was founded in 1999, building on activities pioneered within ICI plc, Zeneca plc, and Oxford Materials Ltd.

Feedback from the PROFITS (PROduct Formulation using InTelligent Software) special interest group at the University of Bradford showed that a vehicle was needed to deliver new technologies to formulation-based industry. In recognition of this need, Intelligensys was founded to focus on the use of new technologies, especially in artificial intelligence, for product formulation. Since that time we have grown to encompass selected areas of simulation, so that we cover all three areas - data, rules, and theory - in specific industrial domains.

The key people involved in the company are:

Professor Ray Rowe - Chief Scientist

Ray Rowe has now joined Intelligensys, following his retirement from his post as Company Research Associate at AstraZeneca, UK. In AstraZeneca, he supervised a team engaged in research and problem-solving in all areas of physical sciences (including colloid science, powder technology, and knowledge engineering) involved in the formulation of medicines. He joined AstraZeneca (formerly ICI/Zeneca Pharmaceuticals) in 1973, after gaining a BPharm at the University of Nottingham, UK in 1969 and a PhD from the University of Manchester, UK, in 1973. Ray has been involved with Intelligensys since its inception in 1999.

The author of over 300 research papers and reviews, Ray also holds eight patents. His research interests lie in the area of polymer coating, powder technology including compaction and granulation, structural characterization of complex colloid systems and, more recently, applications of knowledge engineering to formulation and analysis.

In 1992 he was designated Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society for distinction in the Science of Pharmacy, and in 1993 he was awarded a DSc from the University of Manchester. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a Member of the Institute of Physics. He has been an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a visiting professor at the Universities of Strathclyde (Scotland) and an Santiago de Compestela (Spain). He is currently a visiting professor at the University of Bradford (UK) where he is a founder of the PROFITS special interest group.

He is a co-author of the Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients.

Dr Elizabeth Colbourn - Scientific Director

Elizabeth Colbourn is a founding director of Intelligensys, responsible for delivery of consultancy services, for co-ordinating product management, software development and for our customer support activity. To do this, she draws on 30 years' experience in applying modelling to real industrial problems.

For several years she was based at ICI plc's Wilton Research Centre, where she established and let the materials modelling team which provided modelling solutions for most of ICI's materials-based businesses. In 1990, she was appointed to ICI's prestigious Scientific Ladder, one of the first two women to attain this position.

In 1993, she left ICI to set up Oxford Materials Ltd. focusing on the design and application of a range of simulation tools for materials modelling. In addition, she pioneered the introduction of the CAD/Chem system - a forerunner of INForm - in the UK market. This activity subsequently formed the nucleus for Intelligensys.

A Canadian by birth, she is the author of over 50 refereed publications in the scientific literature as well as a number of popular articles. She has an Honours BSc in Chemistry from Queen's University, Canada, and a D Phil in Theoretical Chemistry from the UK's University of Oxford. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a member of the American Chemical Society, and actively participates in EPSRC's peer review process.

Professor Peter York - Director

Peter York is Professor of Physical Pharmaceutics at the University of Bradford. His research activities involve pharmaceutical material science, coupled to aspects of chemical engineering and processing, with particular focus on molecular modelling and solid-state structure, particle formation including novel processes using supercritical fluid technology, and drug delivery design. He has consulted widely throughout the world, published over 300 scientific articles, holds numerous patents, and has received several research awards. Peter was the driving force behind Bradford Particle Design Ltd, a spinout venture from the University of Bradford. The company, based on research and patents in particle formation by supercritical fluids, was acquired by Inhale Therapeutics (now Nektar Therapeutics) in 2001.

Neil S Robertson - Commercial Director

Neil Robertson, a founding director of Intelligensys, is skilled in assessing client and business needs, and brings active experience in real formulation-driven environments in pharmaceuticals and chemicals.

Experienced in realizing innovative and creative solutions for business, he has a background in marketing, business development and commercial management at director level.

He is a Scotsman with international experience in senior management positions with Hoechst Roussel, Akzo Nobel, BP Chemicals and Rhone Poulenc. He holds a BSc(Honours) degree in Chemistry and Business Studies from the University of Salford (UK), a Master's degree in Business Administration from Strathclyde Graduate Business School, the Chartered Institute postgraduate Diploma of Marketing, and is a Chartered Marketer. In addition, he is a visiting lecturer with the UK's Open University Business School Masters program in Innovation and Creative Management, and has run his own consultancy business.

Within Intelligensys, he is responsible for business planning and business development.

Jeremy Foot - Service Delivery Manager

Jeremy Foot has extensive experience of specifying and delivering information systems. His skills lie in working with clients to identify problems and requirements and to agree and implement integrated software systems.

His background as a chemist, and his experience as a modeller in ICI plc, means that he understand the technical language and challenges involved in the formulation environment. He has a BSc Honours degree in Chemistry from University College London, and a research MSc in Chemical Modelling from the University of Keele.

Within Intelligensys, Jeremy is responsible for integration of intelligent applications with information management systems, and for specifying client requirements and implementing appropriate solutions.
